Hernia Repair Surgery

Hernias are typically treated surgically. Open repair, laparoscopic (minimally invasive) repair, and robotic repair are the three basic forms of hernia surgery. This article describes each procedure in depth. Hernias are typically treated surgically. Hernia surgery is classified into three types: open hernia repair, laproscopic hernia repair, and robotic hernia repair. An incision or cut in the groin is made for open hernia repair. The "sac" hernia harboring the bulging intestine is discovered. The hernia is subsequently pushed back into the abdomen and the abdominal wall is strengthened with stitches or synthetic mesh. Most patients can go home a few hours after surgery and will be well in a few days. Exercise and strenuous exertion are prohibited. A laparoscope, a narrow, telescope-like equipment introduced through a small incision at the umbilicus (belly button), is used in laparoscopic (minimally invasive) hernia repair. Because this treatment is normally done under general anesthesia, you will have an evaluation of your general health prior to the surgery, which will include a history, physical exam (and perhaps lab testing), and an electrocardiogram (EKG).
